Salt and Pepa, the iconic hip-hop rap group, may have had their asymmetrical short, fly haircuts. The Rapper Maiya wears her braided hairstyles while on the Mic.
Maiya named herself Sistopher Wallace in her Instagram bio, paying homage to the late Great Notorious B.I.G aka Christopher Wallace.

Maiya the Don’s raw talent reminds me of something… an era of real rap and hip hop. The era of mixtapes, cold winters, and fly fits. I love raw talent, and she has it from the way she dresses to her Brooklyn and Puerto Rican roots. Her Afro-Latina, Nuyorican, Caribbean flava with everything in between. She was a makeup artist turned beauty creator turned rapper. So, the TikTok community from her beauty days are her loyal supporters and following. Soon, she will capture the world with the gift God has given her: lyricism and punchlines.

You may see Maiyathedon on her social media stories saying she is looking for a braider. Next thing you know, she’s like, forget it, I got it! Maiya’s on social stories halfway done with her knotless extension braids. Maiya says, “ Her natural hair color is sandy brown with some ash blonde. Maiya the Don talks frequently about wanting to be the rapper of this generation who wears her ash-blonde, brown, curly, textured hair and brings her own uniqueness and style as a rapper. Maiya loves braid extensions, including her lemonade braids, and cornrows in different hip styles. Maiya says, “ I’m going to be committed to wearing my natural hair and braids because black women and their natural hair deserve to have space in hip hop.”

She shows up for the community; she’s been spotted in Harlem performing at Harlem Tavern, a popular NYC local bar and restaurant. I had the pleasure of enjoying a listening party with the book baddies at the Central Brooklyn Public Library event Books and Bars with Maiya the Don, and I also showed up at the Bronx Book Festival. Her love of culture and its intersection, incorporating beauty, fashion, and literature, cannot be denied. It doesn’t hurt that she is into reading books by authors like Tia Williams and Kennedy Ryan. On the flip side, she also makes me want to read classics by Toni Morrison and Michaela Angela Davis too. She has a Kindle with all the Iconic Rappers on it, including Foxy, Lil Kim, and Eve. She named her Kindle Little Kin to pay homage to Iconic rapper Lil Kim.

Her love for a lemon pepper freestyle has me wanting to jump up and down saying yoooo and yesss because she is just what the culture needed! She embraces who she is in all forms, incorporating a fitness lifestyle by going to the gym daily. She is relatable to all young women from every urban area across the nation for the simple fact that she was in the beauty supply store with a huge tub of Ecostyler gel, her scarf, long nails with nail art, and her homies in her debut ‘Telfy’ music video. Every black and brown woman can relate to that moment right there. Maiya describes herself as hyper feminine; she loves a good heel daily and lives for black-owned brand outfits. Maiya the Don can tell you a thing or two about a fashion moment with her fly glasses, cute heels, and fashion-statement pieces.
