More Than a Celebrity Hairstylist: How Asia Kendra Is Building a Legacy Beyond the Chair

When Asia Kendra walks into a room, she carries the confidence of someone who has spent more than a decade mastering her craft. But ask her what she’s most proud of, and she’ll tell you it’s not just her celebrity clients, viral transformations or successful business ventures. It’s mainly the people she’s helped along the way.

Still, there’s no denying Kendra’s talent.

Known for her flawless installs, impeccable attention to detail and luxury approach to hairstyling, Kendra has become one of the most sought-after hairstylists in the industry. From her former Brooklyn-based salon, AK Studios, she has built a reputation for creating an experience that goes far beyond hair.

From the moment clients sit in her chair, they’re treated to a level of care, professionalism and personalization that keeps them coming back. For Kendra, every appointment is designed to make women feel confident, beautiful and empowered.

“It’s more than just hair,” she said. “It’s a safe space where women can relax, talk, reset and leave feeling like the best version of themselves.”

That philosophy has attracted an impressive roster of clients. Over the years, Kendra has worked with several high-profile personalities, including Jess Hilarious, co-host of The Breakfast Club, as well as Natalie Nunn, Body By Raven, Sasha Keable, Joan Smalls and more.

Yet despite her celebrity success, Kendra’s story began much like many aspiring beauty professionals.

A performing arts student with dreams of singing, dancing and acting, she discovered hairstyling as a teenager at just 16 years old in 2014 while attending LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts and quickly fell in love with the artistry behind it. Armed with determination and countless hours of self-teaching, she mastered wigs, weaves and hair coloring long before they became mainstream beauty staples.

Her talent and entrepreneurial spirit eventually led her to open her first salon suite around the age of 18, before the salon suite model was even popularized. Then at just 22 years old, in 2020, at the height of the pandemic, she opened AK Studios, a thriving beauty destination that at one point housed 14 beauty professionals across hair, nails, makeup, aesthetics, lashes and more, a true one-stop shop.

As a first-generation Trinidadian-American and the first entrepreneur in her family, Kendra often found herself navigating business ownership without a blueprint. The challenges she faced taught her valuable lessons about leadership, finances and personal growth.

At one of the lowest points of her life, Kendra made a decision that would change everything — she surrendered her life to Christ. That season of faith gave her permission to slow down, step back from the chair and truly ask herself what she was called to do beyond it. In that stillness, clarity came. She began to see what was missing in the industry — not just for herself, but for so many others: talented people running on empty with no financial foundation, no business knowledge and no real community around them. She had lived that story. And once she found clarity through her faith, she felt called to become the resource she never had.

Today, those experiences fuel her passion for mentorship.

After teaching more than 1,000 women during the pandemic through hands-on hairstyling classes, Kendra has shifted much of her focus toward education, coaching beauty professionals on business strategy, customer service and financial literacy.

In 2022, while running one of the most recognized hair brands in New York City, Kendra launched AK Akademy, a fully digital school designed to help beauty professionals go far beyond their talent and truly master the business side of the industry. “There are so many gifted people in beauty who can perform a service flawlessly but have no foundation in business strategy or financial literacy, and without that knowledge, burnout is almost inevitable,” Kendra explains. “I wanted to reach people before they got to where I was. I wanted to be the person I didn’t have.” Since its launch, AK Akademy has helped over 1,500 entrepreneurs through classes, coaching and events.

She is also developing programs to help everyday women learn affordable ways to maintain their hair and preserve their beauty investments.

Looking ahead, Kendra envisions opening a beauty education academy and is expanding her speaking platform and continuing to create opportunities for others.

Kendra has spoken at several major beauty and entrepreneurship events,  including one created by Caribbean dancehall artist Spice, where she shared how she went from unknown hairstylist to building one of New York City’s most recognized hair brands, and LEADHERship in Atlanta, where she addressed over 300 women on entrepreneurship and the systems behind her success. Her impact has not gone unrecognized: she was officially awarded by the New York City Mayor’s Office and City Council for teaching over 1,000 women hairstyling and business skills, an honor she considers one of the defining moments of her career.

And the most ambitious chapter may be just beginning. Kendra is now building BOSS Support,  a safe space and wellness community designed specifically for beauty industry professionals who, much like her younger self, have all the talent in the world but no community, no mentor and no roadmap. A place where beauty entrepreneurs can access real education, real networking and real connection with like-minded people who understand the journey. “Community is what I was missing most when I started,” she says. “I don’t want anyone else to have to figure it out alone.” For Asia Kendra, building that community is not just the next chapter; it is the mission.
