Umber By J. Lenay is more than a skincare brand. It is a response to a very real need that many women have experienced but rarely seen addressed with care. Founder Jasmine Nelson created the line after years of navigating unwanted hair growth, failed treatments, and the emotional toll that often comes with those experiences. Her work has become a blend of beauty, confidence, and advocacy.

This conversation explores the connection between personal care and self-worth, while also giving readers a closer look at the woman behind the brand.
Mo Clark: Can you share a little about your background and how it shaped you?
Jasmine: I was born in Houston and moved to Oakland when I was 16. Later, I studied Architecture and Fashion Design in San Francisco. Those experiences helped shape my eye for structure, detail, and design, all of which influence how I approach my brand.
Mo Clark: What sparked the idea for Umber By J. Lenay?
Jasmine: It came from my own personal struggle with unwanted hair. I tried so many things that didn’t work, and eventually I decided to create something that would.
Mo Clark: What made you stay committed to the idea even before the brand officially launched?
Jasmine: I spent years researching, testing, and learning. I knew I wanted to create something meaningful, so I stayed focused on building a product and a message that would really help people.

Mo Clark: What was the biggest challenge in bringing your vision to life?
Jasmine: Getting out of my introverted shell. I had to learn how to show up, tell my story, and trust that my voice mattered.
Mo Clark: What accomplishment are you most proud of so far?
Jasmine: Passing the five-year mark, building community, raising awareness around PCOS, and creating something that supports my family. Those are all things I’m very proud of.

Mo Clark: What do you want people to understand about your brand?
Jasmine: I want people to know that Umber is rooted in lived experience. It is not just a beauty brand. It is a solution, a community, and a reflection of the women it was created to serve.
