Hype Hair Exclusive
Interview By: Charron Monaye
Some stories are too powerful to remain untold. Some voices are too important to go unheard. And some journeys remind us that no matter how painful the past is, it does not have to determine the future.
Meet Dr. D. Marie Monroe, a woman whose life embodies resilience, faith, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to purpose. A U.S. Army veteran, author, minister, entrepreneur, mentor, cancer survivor, and woman of God, Dr. Monroe has transformed some of life’s most painful experiences into a platform for encouragement, empowerment, and change.

Through her powerful book, Emerged Restored: Trauma Doesn’t Define You, There Is Life on the Other Side, and her upcoming 21-day devotional workbook, Abuse to Abundance: A 21-Day Devotional to Overcoming Trauma While Executing Your Purpose, she is using her voice to remind others that their past does not define them, their pain does not disqualify them, and their circumstances do not determine their destiny. Her journey is not simply about surviving what life has handed her. It is about reclaiming her voice, embracing healing, walking boldly in faith, and discovering the abundance that exists beyond adversity.
In this Hype Hair exclusive, Dr. D. Marie Monroe opens up about her personal journey, the power of telling your truth, the importance of restoration before abundance, and her mission to inspire others to recognize their worth and walk confidently in their God-given purpose. Because her story is more than a story of survival. It is a testimony of what happens when you refuse to let your past write your ending.
HH: Who is D. Marie Monroe beyond the author? What would you like people to know about your heart and your purpose?
Dr. DM: I am a multifaceted woman of faith, creativity, leadership, and purpose. I am a poet, artist, model, U.S. Army Veteran, wife, mother, minister, counselor, mentor, wellness counselor, serial entrepreneur, and founder of The What Now Book Club. Above all, I am a woman of God whose life reflects resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. As a cancer survivor, I understand the power of faith, perseverance, and overcoming life’s unexpected challenges. My personal journey has shaped my passion for encouraging, empowering, mentoring, and inspiring others to recognize their worth and embrace their God-given purpose.

Academically, I hold a Doctor of Philosophy in Theology and Business Leadership, bringing together my passion for spiritual development, personal growth, and leadership. Through my creative work, ministry, counseling, mentorship, and entrepreneurial endeavors, such as Eat Myself Well, I strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. As an author, I use my voice and personal experiences to bring awareness, encouragement, and hope to individuals navigating life’s challenges. My message is rooted in the belief that our past does not define our future and that restoration, healing, and abundance are possible.
I have been nominated for influential recognition and am a candidate for County Commissioner. I continue to embrace opportunities to lead, inspire, serve, and empower others. My philosophy is simple: Live with purpose, walk by faith, lead with love, and never allow your circumstances to determine your destiny.
HH: What did your writing journey look like from the initial idea to holding your finished book, Emerged Restored: Trauma Doesn’t Define You, There Is Life on the Other Side in your hands?
Dr. DM: I wanted to share my life experiences with others who may need to hear my story, find encouragement, recognize situations affecting their own lives, or realize that they are not alone. Some experiences are difficult to talk about, but I believe that sharing them can bring awareness, understanding, and perhaps even help someone see their circumstances differently.

Throughout this journey, I reminded myself that this is my story to tell. While some may wonder, “Why are you sharing your personal business?” my response is that my story may be exactly what someone else needs to hear. I am not sharing it for judgment or approval. I am sharing it because there is power in telling your truth, embracing your experiences, and allowing your journey to make a difference in someone else’s life. Holding my finished book in my hands represents more than completing a writing project. It represents courage, transparency, and the willingness to turn personal experiences into something meaningful for others.
HH: You have a new book coming soon, Abuse to Abundance: A 21-Day Devotional to Overcoming Trauma While Executing Your Purpose. Tell us about this book?
Dr. DM: I am incredibly excited about my upcoming book, Abuse to Abundance: A 21-Day Devotional to Overcoming Trauma While Executing Your Purpose, which will be released globally on December 8, 2026, under Pen Legacy Publishing! This book is especially meaningful to me because it is designed to be more than something you simply read. It is an interactive, 21-day devotional that invites readers to participate in their own journey of self-reflection, healing, and personal transformation.
Throughout the 21 days, readers will have the opportunity to explore past trauma, reflect on experiences that may still be affecting their daily lives, and begin recognizing how those experiences have influenced their thoughts, emotions, and personal growth. Through devotionals, reflection exercises, and interactive activities, my goal is to encourage readers to confront their past, embrace their healing journey, and discover the possibilities that exist beyond their pain.
My vision is to help individuals understand that their past does not have to define their future. Abuse does not have to be the final chapter of anyone’s story. There is an opportunity to move from pain to purpose, from brokenness to healing, and ultimately, from abuse to abundance. I want readers to walk away with renewed hope, a stronger sense of self, and the confidence to embrace a better chapter in their lives.
HH: What can readers expect to experience or take away from your 21-day devotional, Abuse to Abundance, and how do you hope it will transform the way they view their past, healing journey, and future?
Dr. DM: Readers can expect a real, transparent, and meaningful journey of transformation. Abuse to Abundance takes readers from a place of pain, brokenness, and uncertainty toward a foundation of peace, strength, healing, and renewed faith. Throughout this 21-day journey, readers will be encouraged to confront experiences that may have held them back, recognize their strength, and learn how to move forward without remaining trapped in their past.
Life will bring challenges, unexpected battles, and moments when it feels like everything is working against you. But what matters is knowing how to rise, recover, and keep moving forward. As Scripture reminds us, “No weapon formed against you shall prosper” (Isaiah 54:17). I want readers to understand that they do not have to remain victims of their circumstances. They can become victorious through faith, perseverance, and a willingness to embrace healing.
Ultimately, readers can expect to discover that their past does not have the final say in their future. They can reclaim their peace, walk in their purpose, and build a stronger foundation for the life they deserve. The goal is not simply to survive life’s battles, but to become victorious through them.
HH: What do you want readers to know about healing at their own pace, especially those who may feel that they should be further along in their journey?
Dr. DM: To me, the transformation from abuse to abundance is a living, breathing human experience that I simply call LIFE. We all have a story, and at some point in our lives, we have experienced pain, disappointment, heartbreak, or challenges that have shaped who we are today. I believe these experiences are part of the human journey. However, transformation is about more than simply moving past painful experiences. It is about learning to live beyond them. It is recognizing that although our past may have influenced our journey, it does not have to control our identity, our decisions, or our future.
Abundance, to me, means having the freedom to experience peace, joy, love, purpose, and fulfillment without allowing yesterday’s pain to rob us of today’s blessings. It is understood that healing is not always a destination; sometimes, it is a continuous journey of growth, self-discovery, and becoming. Ultimately, Abuse to Abundance is about embracing life in its entirety, acknowledging our experiences, and understanding that we can still live a beautiful, meaningful, and abundant life despite what we have been through.
HH: Your book titles, Emerge Restored and Abuse to Abundance, suggest a journey from one place in life to another. How do you see restoration and abundance working together?
Dr. DM: I believe that restoration and abundance go hand in hand, but restoration must come first. Before you can truly experience abundance, you must allow yourself the opportunity to be restored. Restoration is about healing, rebuilding, rediscovering yourself, and finding peace within. It is about addressing the areas of your life that have been affected by past experiences so you can move forward with a healthier and stronger foundation. When I speak about abundance, I am not referring to financial wealth or material possessions. To me, abundance means being rich in spirit, rich in health, rich in love, rich in peace, and rich in the blessings that life has to offer. It is having a healthy mind, a renewed spirit, and the freedom to live without being defined by your past. Emerge Restored represents the process of healing and becoming whole again, while Abuse to Abundance represents what becomes possible when you begin living from that restored place.
My philosophy is simple: You must first allow yourself to be restored before you can fully embrace the abundance that life has waiting for you.
HH: As you prepare to release Abuse to Abundance, what message do you hope readers take away from your story, and what impact do you hope the book will have on their lives?
Dr. DM: What excites me most about the release of Abuse to Abundance is the impact I hope it will have on people’s lives. I am especially excited about reaching individuals who can relate to my story and may be struggling to find their way to the other side of their own experiences.
My hope is that someone will pick up this book and realize that they are not alone, that their circumstances do not define them, and that there is so much more to life than the pain they have experienced. I want readers to recognize that healing is possible, restoration is attainable, and they do not have to remain stuck in a chapter of their lives that has already passed.
Abuse to Abundance is an invitation to walk alongside me as I share a deeply personal story of a little girl who started with very little but experienced more pain than any child should have to endure. My journey includes brokenness, abandonment, rejection, denial, abuse, torment, nightmares, depression, and sadness. It is a story of growing up motherless and fatherless, experiencing rape and molestation, and facing circumstances that could have easily defined the direction of my life.
But my story does not end there.
I am sharing my story because I know there are people who may be silently carrying similar experiences and wondering if life will ever get better. I want readers to follow my journey and witness what it means to face painful experiences, find the strength to keep going, and discover that there is more to life than what they have endured.
My message is simple: You are not your trauma. You are not your past, and you are not defined by what someone did to you or what you were denied in life. I want people to know that healing is possible, restoration is possible, and abundance is possible. If my story can encourage just one person to look beyond their pain, rediscover their purpose, and believe that a better life is possible, then sharing my journey will have been worth it.
For me, this is bigger than releasing a book. It is about making an impact, creating awareness, and reminding people that their story does not end with abuse. There is life, healing, and abundance on the other side. Your past may explain part of your story, but it does not get to write your ending. This is not the end of your journey. This is the beginning of your abundance!
HH: If you could leave our audience with one message of hope, one truth about healing and one reason to believe in the possibility of a brighter future, what would those be?
Dr. DM: If I could leave your audience with one message of hope, it would be this: Start right where you are, take one step at a time, and keep moving forward. Do not quit, and do not beat yourself up because you are not where you want to be in life. Remember, where you are today is not where you are destined to end up. One truth I want people to understand about healing is that it is a journey, not a race. Give yourself grace. Do not allow your past, your mistakes, or the circumstances you have experienced to keep you from embracing what lies ahead. You do not have to have everything figured out to take the next step.
And if I could give you one reason to believe in a brighter future, it is this: God is not finished with your story! Pick up your bag of bricks, knock the dust off your feet, release what has been weighing you down, and move forward with the expectation that God has already gone before you. Trust Him with the journey, even when you cannot see what lies ahead. Be encouraged! Keep believing, keep growing, and keep walking in faith. Your circumstances may have shaped parts of your story, but they do not have to determine your future!
You have a life to live, a purpose to fulfill, and an abundance waiting on the other side of your journey. God has got it!
Don’t allow where you are today to convince you that this is where your story ends. Keep walking, keep believing, and trust God with the chapters you have yet to live.
